But you’re a choir… Why are you going solo?!

Solo performances are a rite of passage for many singers who participate in choirs: it’s a great opportunity to build individual vocal skills and confidence with a supportive audience. While most of those who put their hand up to sing solo tend to be more experienced singers, it’s especially exciting when the opportunity encourages emerging (or introverted) performers to step forward and showcase what they can do.

We bang on about the benefits of singing in choirs - obviously. We work really hard to create a space where all abilities can explore singing because it’s so damn good for your social wellbeing. And we get a lot of people joining us without any experience who quickly discover they love singing and performing on stage with their metal comrades!

If you’ve been following us since the earlier days of Heavy Choir, we featured a number of solo parts and feature performances. Remember that incredible Floor Jansen cover of  ‘Dangerous Game’ performed by our own Katherine and Jamie at Memo Music Hall?

Or the haunting solo opening of Iron Maiden's 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' at Chapel Off Chapel?

And what about the blood-soaked Twisted Sister banger ‘Burn in Hell’ that Scottie rocked at Valhalla Brewhall dressed as Egyptian God, Anubis?

Over the years, we didn’t have quite the number of singers we do now, so spotlighting soloists, duets and ensembles were a great way to create light and shade in our limited repertoire and vocal capacity. These days of course, we’ve got almost 60 singers (hell yeah!), and that has opened up great depth in our choral arrangement possibilities - but it does mean we’ve put solos aside. (Except for Theo and Leah who still feature as soloists in our cover of ‘Aerials’ by System of a Down… and we LOVE it).

Over time, one of the greatest joys is seeing many of our Heavy Choir members step out of their shells with an earned sense of self-confidence. This happens in rehearsal, at social gatherings, and of course, on stage. While our seasoned singers are always up for a chance to rock out in the spotlight, it’s a particular thrill to see emerging singers work towards sharing their voice solo and often doing it most epically! And while solo performances aren’t exactly what Heavy Choir is about, on this night at The Gem, we’re supporting (and celebrating) the personal growth and expression of our diverse metalhead community.

Our choir members have been preparing diligently for this gig, coordinating their own duets and ensembles, arrangements and even stage outfits! Showcasing a range of unique vocal styles, creativity and a pure love of rock and metal, Rock Revue at The Gem will feature: a gothic cabaret and a duet of doom, an acoustic 80s drag ballad and a musical Space Opera - even Bob Dylan gets a heavy remake; plus an ode to Blind Guardian, Danzig, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Dickinson, and more!

So support our community of singers and get your tickets now for Heavy Choir’s debut night of rockin’ heavy SOLO tributes!
